College sports are a uniquely American institution that provide life-changing educational and leadership-development opportunities to more than 500,000 student-athletes through almost $4 billion in scholarships each year.  College athletics also provide substantial support to local economies and form an indelible part of family activities, pastimes, and culture in many communities. 

ORLANDO, Fla. — Student-athletes at Florida high schools can receive compensation for their name, image and likeness after the State Board of Education on Wednesday approved new rules proposed by the Florida High School Activities Association.

Starting June 7, 2025, NCAA Division I student-athletes must report third-party Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals with a total value of six hundred dollars ($600) or more in the aggregate.

The complicated, frustrating and often murky world of NIL (name, image and likeness) has touched every corner of college sports. From college football and basketball to gymnastics and softball, the landscape of college athletics drastically changed four years ago when the NCAA changed rules to allow student athletes to profit from NIL.

College athletes weren't always allowed to make money off their athletic ability. It wasn't until 2021 that the NCAA changed rules to allow students to profit from their name, image and likeness -- otherwise known as NIL.
